March for Open Borders Basel
Europe is at a turning point. The reintroduction of border controls and the erosion of the Schengen area threaten our freedom, our cooperation and our European identity. Switzerland is not unaffected by this either.
“Temporary” border controls have been in place for over a year and a half - and the number is increasing. Poland recently effectively closed its borders with Germany and Lithuania. Germany, on the other hand, controls almost all its borders.
We do not want to accept this!
The Schengen Agreement was and is a promise:
Freedom, prosperity and a life without borders
This promise is currently being broken - through national solo efforts.
Stop border controls in the Schengen area
YES to a Europe in freedom and without borders
Volt stands for a Europe that sticks together. For solutions that we find together - not by retreating into national shells.
On Saturday, July 19, 2025, demonstrations for open borders will take place at many German border points - including ours!
Why?
Because irregular migration is supposed to be stopped and the government is not abiding by the law → this endangers our democracy!
Instead of creating solutions, fear is being stirred up - and with it the dismantling of our freedoms. A return to national borders is not the answer, but a step backwards.
What matters now:
The European Commission must act - with infringement proceedings against Germany and Poland. And we must also speak up. Because Europe does not need new walls, but more cooperation. Not barriers, but solidarity. Not a policy of fear, but a policy of freedom.
